Quimper Individual Salt Cellar – Circa 1920
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010A little history: Quimper Pottery, has been manufactured in Quimper a town in Brittany, France for over 300 years. Since Roman times, Quimper has produced desirable pottery. The HB-Henriot Faiencerie was founded in 1690 by Jean-Baptiste Bousquet who was given a royal manufacturing license by King Louis XIV. Each piece of Quimper China is completely handmade and painstakingly hand-painted. Each piece of Quimper china is unique. The individual salt cellar shown here has managed to survive some 80+ years in remarkably good condition. It measures approximately 1″ tall by 2 1/4″ long by 1 3/4″ wide and the underside is marked “Henriot Quimper 82″ which dates this item to 1920. This salt can be referenced in the “5,000 Open Salts” collectors guide, by Heacock & Johnson, (salt # 1729) as Scarce (hard to find) @ $25- $30 US.
When I first aquired this scarce and very lovely salt cellar I was thrilled to add it to my collection. But (you saw that coming didn’t you) my collection has grown and I find that this lovely salt cellar no longer fits in. The question became is a salt cellar considered as Scarce a good enough reason to keep it? After careful consideration I decided it was not, although it is lovely it sticks out like a sore thumb and ruins the aesthetics of the collection. So this little beauty has found itself up for sale in my Ruby Lane Shop
